Walk on air against your better judgement.

Heaney told us this "is about keeping your feet on the ground but looking up as well". It captures Richard’s resilience and positivity in the face of serious and debilitating illness. It was a privilege to witness Rick and Brona’s togetherness and their devotion to, and support from, their sons, of whom they are so rightly proud. Rick and Brona faced the past few years with an unfailing ability to ask the right questions. They carefully processed the avalanche of information they were given, to arrive always at exactly the right decision.  What Rick bore with unbelievable lightness was unimaginable.  What struck me was the extent to which Rick engaged with every member of staff he came in contact with at Harefield.  Everyone knew him.  Every single person who entered his room on his last day wanted to emphasize how much their conversations with Rick had mattered. How he asked them about themselves and their families and remembered what they told him.  How he could pick up each thread and continue when they next were on duty.  This selflessness should really be impossible in the circumstances in which Rick found himself, and yet it came to Rick with ease.  I have only had a glimpse of what missing Rick will mean for his family, it is impossible to measure. However, I know that because they have been a part of Rick’s life and hold on to his values, they will support each other. I hope they will in time find a way to be happy again.
